You don't need a guide or need take a tour to visit the Kruger National Park. The Kruger Park is the ideal self drive safari vacation. The roads leading to the Kruger National Park from Joburg are a tarred and in good condition. With the Maputo Corridor allowing you to travel on dual carriageway for most of the way. By driving yourself you have the flexibility and freedom to discover the Kruger National Park at your own pace. Kruger Park offers a great value for money vacation. There are many petrol stations along the way and easy-to-follow maps are available.
Kruger Park direct has compiled the following self drive itinerary that can easily be amended to suit your requirements. This is a budget safari staying in Sanparks accommodation which must be booked far in advance.
Day 1: Joburg to Kruger National Park
Follow the N2 to Nelspruit which is 355 km away and then another 46km onto Malelane. This should take approximately 5 hours. Malelane gates close at sunset (17h30 in winter) . remember that the speed limit within the park is 50km / hour. All camps have set opening/closing times. See Gate travelling times
The entrance fee to the Kruger Park at the Malelane Gate is R120 / day for foreign visitors. Berg en Dal Restcamp is 7km away, they offer bungalows or chalets at very reasonable prices.
That afternoon you can do your first game drive at about 15h00. Follow the Rhino Trail in the Camp and view the eco-display in reception. Berg-en-Dal camp has cell phone reception and email.
Its NB to get a detailed map of the Kruger Park at the shop and to stock up on refreshments for the game drives. Plan your game drives from the map and check at Reception for the list of the day's game sightings and locations. You should start your game drive about 2.5 hours before the sun sets. Follow the Jock of the Bushveld Route to Crocodile Bridge (42km) Remember to drive slowly with regular stops. There are so many animals to see and sightings of rare species can be the highlight of your vacation.
Take a look at one of the Bushman Paintings sites. Berg-en-Dal is the only safari camp set in a rugged mountain environment and its built on the site of a prehistoric settlement. Make sure that you return to the camp for the gates close. Enjoy an early dinner at the Rhino Restaurant, retire early amidst the sounds of a African Lions.
