Prehistoric San settlements in the Kruger Park are usually sites of great intrigue - authentic rock paintings and cave shelters, sometimes offset by the nearby rush of a river or the splash birds in a dam. The impressive settlements around the Matjulu Spruit are complimented by another notable feature - Berg-en-dal rest camp.
Constructed specifically with the care and preservation of the area at large in mind, Berg-en-dal is also one of the Kruger’s newest facilities. Accommodation includes seventy-two tent sites with communal ablutions and electricity points, sixty-nine bungalows with air conditioning and perimeter views, and twenty-three cottages with open plan kitchens, air conditioning, and separate showers, baths, and toilets. Two of the latter units are also wheelchair friendly.
Additionally, guests have the option to stay in one of the canp’s luxury units. With fully stocked kitchens, air-conditioning, multiple bedrooms and separate bathrooms, and TVs have limited DSTV access. The J Le Roux unit sleeps six, the Rhino unit eight.
Guests looking for adventure at Berg-en-dal can take part in guided bush walks and game drives, supervised and conducted by keen and informative field guides. Guests should take note that children younger than six are not permitted on game drives, and anyone under the age of twelve will be restricted from game walks. The Bushman and Wolhuter Wilderness Trails are prebooked, overnight activities, and must be arranged up to eleven months in advance. The popular Rhino perimeter trail is accessible to the blind as well as being wheelchair accessible, and seasonal children’s educational programmes, nightly wildlife films and an eco-display in the reception all add to the bustling atmosphere of this charming camp area.
With facilities at the camp including restaurants, shops, an internet cafe, laundromat, auditorium and conference facilities, and a residents-only swimming pool, and the area including a healthy wildlife population of white rhino, leopard, grey rhebok, warthog, kudu, giraffe, elephant, reedbuck, impala, klipspringer, wild dog, and lion on the roads to Skukuza and Crocodile Bridge, guests can be sure of an authentic, exciting African adventure.
