Makalali Game Reserve
When the first settlers from Europe came to South Africa they explored the interior of an unspoiled country where vast plains of animals roamed free. Great migrations of animals moved between the area where the Kruger National Park is today and the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, known to the ancient Zulu cultures that lived in its shadow as the 'barrier of spears'. Makalali Game Reserve is a game reserve that recaptures the spirit of the South Africa of old, with vast hers migrating across the country. Comprising a staggering 61 000 acres, Makalali Game Reserve is a unique initiative in the lower Limpopo Province, near the Kruger National Park. Within the park, a 5 000 acre buffalo breeding camp is also found.
In the last ten years, Makalali Game Reserve has introduced a large variety of animals, including lion, cheetah, leopard and the sable antelope, a rare find. Elephant herds were relocated in Makalali Game Reserve from the Kruger National Park to avoid culling. White rhino and sable antelope are among the other species that have been relocated to Makalali Game Reserve. The reserve has a volunteer initiative, The Siyafunda Conservation Initiative. this initiative is primarily a research initiative aimed at studying the animals, such as the elephant contraception initiative that prevents elephant culling. The lion/predator management initiative focuses on maintaining the delicate balance between prey and predator. The programs involve volunteers in monitoring elephants, lions, leopards and wildcats, and gives visitors a welcome chance to spy on the beautiful creatures of Africa.
