Olifants Rest Camp Reviews

Stay At Olifants
My Stay at Olifants was about the best out of the three camps that we stayed at. The Accomodation was quite good, definitely better than the other two, and the view was fantastic.

Sunset Game Drive was also very pleasant, however overall I think that Kruger Park is overated. Accomodation needs a major upgrade.

I would not recommend Kruger Park to any of my friends.

Cottage 74
The cottage was good but the shower drain was blocked and we had to wait for a long while in order to rinse off. The restaurant service was very slow even when we ordered from the Favourites menu. The steak was so small that it was totally covered by the egg. Also the restaurant was without many items - including chicken. But in general a pleasant and well kept camp.

Not so great for family
Overall we really enjoyed Olifants - the look out is great and although the camp was full it did not feel overcrowded. One thing that should be addressed is your "family" rooms - there is not enough room in the bungalows for the extra beds that are put in and thus for a family ( we were on our own but my sister has 2 children) it was not comfortable. They should look at putting in bunk beds rather. I will commend Wilhelmina of the reception at Olifants for her help in getting the 3 bookings of my family made separately to by next to eachother.

Feedback
We realy enjoyed our stay at Olifants. It's a beautiful camp with spectacular views and scenary. The night game drive we went on, was a bit disappointing. The game ranger started of enthusiastic but became quite dull and at times did not stop to view things we saw. Apart from that, Olifants was great. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings and great sightings.

Olifants
When I arrived at Olifants I got excellent assistance from the staff in upgrading my chalet to one with "river view", the chalet itself was clean, comfortable and with a lovely cooling fan, the outdoors kitchen as well. The Olifants restaurant offered very nice food compared to other camp restaurants I have frequented in the park.

BEWARE OF THE SECURITY IN KRUGER - NOT FROM THE ANIMALS BUT THE CONTRACTORS STAFF !!!
We stayed for 3 nights in Punda Maria without any problems - staff and accomodation Good

BUT on our 1 night at Mopani our room was broken into and an expensive Sony video camera was stolen, whilst we were eating (only approx 1 hr 15 mins away from room) At the same time 2 other units were robbed, the Police were brought in and arrested a man that was working for a thatching contractor. The workmen appear to have un-restricted access to all the camp - discussing this with South Africans we were told there are generally problems when work is been done on neigbouring units.

We feel these workmen should be off the camp when they have finished work, if one were staying in a hotel we would not put up with workmen wandering around outside working hours - staying at a Kruger Camp is not a cheap nights stay, so visitors should be assured of good security.

We then moved to Olifants for 3 nights without any problems.

Food - very limited and boring memu, now provided by a catering contractor

I would recommend a stay in Kruger, but keep your valuables at home or lock them in the car boot.

Great experience
The camp was great, very well maintained. The viewing platform looking across the river is fantastic, this is where we saw the leopard. Fantastic to see a black rhino on the night drive. Saw so much game on the drive to Olifonts from the Orpen Gate.

Enjoyable visit
Oliphants is a beautiful camp...we enjoy our stay and the sunset & night drives. We also did the morning hike, which was amazing. The only two poor aspects of the visit was 1) our bunglow has a tree that obstructed our view of the river...it seems the tree could be trimmed or cut in order to have the view preserved; and 2) the food in the restaurant was not good. We did not like the dinner choices so did not have dinner. The breakfast food was okay tasting, but a very skimpy portion. I had to go snack on something after having breakfast. The views are beautiful however and we saw so much wild life in that area. We would stay again, but have noted the bunglow numbers with nicer views.

Best view ever
This weekend just proved it again! Olifants Camp is one of the most beautiful camps in the Kruger park. With its breathtaking viewpoint and Open deck restaurant on the edge of the mountain you can relax and completely forget about the cities madness. The Olifants River is a spectacular sight from the camp and if you did not sleep one night in olifants camp you mist out on a incredible part of the park.

Had a wonderful time
I really have nothing but positive things to say except for one thing--the beds at the Camp were very poor. I would not want to have to sleep on them for more than one night - that was barely tolerable. The park should be offering a better sleeping experience.

Olifants rest camp
We were looking forward to our stay at Olifants having stayed there before in 2008. On our previous visit everything was looking tired and I'm sure that work was in progress to update the main lodge. It has been updated but still looks empty and unwelcoming. For a large camp it offers an inadequate area at the bar/ restaurant to sit outside whilst having a drink. The tables were full when we arrived except one, it was next to a large tree that blocked the view of the river completely. The rooms were tired need a coat of paint and new curtains. The staff at the reception are doing San Parks no favours, they did not ask if we wished to have a Game Drive or even give an example of the many activities on offer that I believe can be undertaken at the camp. All in all very disappointing!

Mopani Rest Camp
It was our first time staying at the camp. The main lodge was delightful with a lovely decking area to have a sundowner looking over the water. It had a feel of being exclusive with the furnishings within the bar area to a high spec. It was quiet and restful. We asked for some crisps or nuts at the bar to have with our drinks only to find that they did not sell them. My husband walked to the camp shop, only a few meters away and purchased some himself. This is something that could be easily undertaken by the lodge, and a missed marketing event. We went self catering so did not eat at the restaurant. The chalet was a little tired but clean. One of the outside lights did not work which was a slight problem as this was also where we were to cook. We had our own camping light so the problem was solved for us but not for maybe an international guest.

The camp has everything, except the client focus and client emphathy
GREAT LOCATION, GREAT CONCEPT. But the staff should be trained to show more interest to help and advice on what camp has to offer, Yo have to question to get minimal info. They should give info regarding camp or activities prior to asking.
For ex : I had to ask about activities - they do not offer first hand. Or when I asked if there is at least film projection I was told to go and ask elsewhere . But there was nobody available . So we checked the paper displayed, Unfortunately it had not only wrong title of featured film, but the wrong timetable, so we had mist the beginning The staff is not very much client oriented, It look like if they take their jobs and positions for granted.

Generally the park was very nice. However I suggest that visitors (first time visitors) are warned about the gate times. I was of the opinion that the gates referred to on the confirmation were specifically for the game reserve and not for where we will be accommodated as well. I do take the responsibility of knowing where I am going however please ensure that all the first time visitors are notified that rest houses are inside the park.

Secondly the receptionists could be a lot nicer. I had a situation where I was described as a house number I was staying in. One receptionist was making the other one aware that I was at the reception. She basically said (example) “ no. 36” is here instead of using my name.

Olifants rest camp needs serious revamp
Why no pool as in other camps?

Older bungalows need to be redecorated. No star gazing as advertised. They did not do a bush walk.

I would recommend visiting Olifants after new facilities and renovations are in place.
