Maroela Camp

Maroela rest camp is one of the Kruger National park’s only two exclusive caravan stops – affixed to the banks of the Timbavati River, the camp boasts charming rustic viewing platforms, close encounters with wildlife through the fenced off border, and a proud lack of pre-erected accommodation structures. Guests arrive here, tents in tow, and create their own camping experience.

Accommodation at Maroela is available in the form of twenty individual campsites, all with electricity points, and communal ablutions and kitchen facilities. Backpackers, caravaners and outdoorsmen will find this self catering accommodation extremely suitable.

At Maroela, activities are all about getting out into the park: guests can partake in guided bush walks, trekking out into the bush under the protective and informative wing of one of the park’s trained bush guides. Here they will get to spot local wildlife from far more intimate vantage points than they might otherwise find. Later in the evening, night drives are conducted with the use of spotlights, and the Kruger’s nocturnal community comes out to play! For guests less inspired to venturing out into the park, a variety of wildlife makes frequent use of the camp’s watering hole, in plain sight of the camp’s fence. Guests are advised that children younger than the age of six will not be allowed to accompany them on game drives, and children younger than twelve are barred from game walks.

Also available, as pre-booked activity, the Bundu Trail must be booked up to eleven months in advance. Any and all activities are coordinated via Orpen Rest Camp. Facilities include communal kitchens and ablution blocks.

Game viewing in the area incorporates local populations of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog, impala, and elephant, as well as lion, cheetah and leopard, and a host of exciting and different bird populations.
